Inheritance Tax Calculator

Most people are told inheritance tax is 40% and left to work out the rest themselves. In practice the number depends on which allowances apply to you, what you have given away in the last seven years, and whether your estate qualifies for reliefs that can remove business or agricultural property from the calculation entirely.

This calculator walks through all of it. It asks about your assets, your liabilities, gifts you have already made, the reliefs you might qualify for, and your family circumstances, then shows what your estate would currently be assessed on and where the largest exposures sit. It takes about five minutes and needs no registration.

It is built by Chartered Tax Advisers who prepare these calculations professionally, and it follows current HMRC rules on the nil-rate band, the residence nil-rate band and its taper, potentially exempt transfers, and the main reliefs.

What the calculator covers

The £325,000 nil-rate band, and any allowance transferred from a late spouse or civil partner.

The residence nil-rate band, including the taper that withdraws it on larger estates.

Gifts made in the last seven years, and how taper relief affects them.

Business property relief and agricultural property relief.

Assets held in trust, and the effect of any planning already in place.

It produces an estimate, not advice. It cannot see how your assets are owned or what your will says, and those details routinely move the number in both directions.
